With the recent news of rising gas prices and several smaller energy suppliers collapsing this is a really worrying time for people who struggle with their energy costs. We’re sharing some easier to follow advice that will help answer some of the questions you might have.

Q. What happens if my supplier goes bust?

A. If your energy provider collapses, you will not stop receiving gas and electricity. Your account will be moved to a new supplier by energy regulator Ofgem although this may take a few weeks.

Q. Should I switch supplier if I’m concerned about my energy supplier?

A. Due to the crisis there is a reduction in the number of tariffs available especially the cheaper ones, many switching services such as Uswitch are pausing or reducing services they offer, you can do directly to a supplier but the tariffs on offer are likely to be higher than what you are currently paying. We recommend people to stay with their existing supplier in the short term.

Q. Will I end up on a more expensive tariff?

A. Unfortunately, you may end up on a more expensive tariff if you are switched to a new supplier. If you are concerned about your energy costs, please do contact us on 0300 365 3005 or

Q. Is there anything else I should do if I’m worried my energy supplier will go bust?

A. We recommend making a note or taking a photo of your meter reading and downloading any bills while you wait for news or your new supplier to contact you. We can guide people over the phone on how to take correct meter readings.

Q. Do I need to cancel any of my direct debits if my supplier goes bust?

A. There is no need to cancel any direct debits straight away. Instead, you should wait for your new account to be set up before cancelling the existing payment.

Q. I have credit on my account, will I get this money back?

A. If you are in credit, your money is protected and you’ll be paid back. If you were in debt to the old supplier, you’ll still have to pay the money back. The new supplier will contact you to arrange payment.

Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters. They’re currently being installed in homes across Great Britain at no extra cost, to replace traditional meters. Smart meters:

  • measure how much gas and electricity is being used and show how much it’s costing on a handy in-home display (IHD)
  • enable accurate, not estimated bills – so you know exactly how much your bill should be, and how much to budget
  • send your gas and electricity readings directly and securely to the energy supplier so you don’t have to

How could a smart meter save you money?

If you’re on a tight budget, a smart meter could make your life easier. The in-home display (IHD) which you’ll receive with your smart meter shows you, in near-real time, the amount of energy you use in pounds and pence. Allowing you to keep an even closer eye on your energy spending habits. This could help you find ways to reduce energy waste around your home and save money.

Green Homes Grant Voucher Scheme

If you’re a homeowner or residential landlord, you can apply for a Green Homes Grant voucher towards the cost of installing energy efficient improvements for your home, such as low carbon heating or insulation. 

The vouchers will cover two-thirds of the cost of eligible improvements, up to a maximum government contribution of £5,000, or £10,000 if the household is on a low income.

To understand what energy efficiency improvements are best suited to your home, you can visit the Simple Energy Advice website or refer to your home’s Energy Performance Certificate.

Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery Scheme

Groundwork London is working with Ealing Council, Hounslow Council, Kensington & Chelsea Council, Brent Council, Harrow Council and Lambeth Council to assess residents’ eligibility for the Local Authority Delivery Green Homes Grant scheme (GHG LAD scheme).

The Green Homes Grant LAD Scheme can provide up to £10,000 per household for energy efficiency improvements for your home. The installation will be handled by a contractor arranged by your local authority or housing association.

Types of measures that could be installed include:

  • Loft, cavity wall, floor, roof and solid wall insulation
  • New heating controls, radiators and heat pumps
  • Windows and door upgrades

To be eligible, you need to:

  • Live in Hounslow, Kensington & Chelsea, Ealing, Harrow, Lambeth or Brent
  • Live in a home with an energy performance rating of E, F or G. If you’re unsure, you can check your EPC rating via the Government’s website
  • Have a total annual household income of less than £30,000. Household income is calculated according to:
    • How much you and/or your partner receive from salary or wages
    • How much you receive from pensions or pensions credit
    • How much you receive from maintenance / child support, boarders or lodgers, student loans or grant
    • How much you receive from benefits, such as Universal Credit, Carers Allowance, or Housing Benefit

In the UK, 1 in 7 household are living in fuel poverty, unable to afford to effectively heat their homes. A situation made worse by high energy prices, dwindling household incomes and low standards of domestic energy efficiency including poor quality housing stock.

The government defines a household as fuel poor if they have fuel costs that are above average and, if they were to spend that amount, they would be left with an income below the official poverty line.

Living in a cold home can have longer-term impacts on health and wellbeing. Each year, £1.3bn is spent on health services in England for treating illnesses caused by cold homes. The most effected households tend to be those on low incomes, people with disabilities or suffering from a long-term illness and older people.

How has COVID-19 impacted fuel poverty?

A report by NEA found that the impact of COVID-19 on fuel poor households has been unparalleled, with people using more energy in the home but having less financial resource due to unemployment or furlough. With increased debt comes energy rationing, which is devastating at a time when staying warm is even more important than ever to staying healthy.

Accessing support has been more difficult during COVID-19, especially in households which are digitally excluded or speak English as an additional language. The restrictions have also caused reductions in services which could be helping people to have more affordable energy usage, such as smart meter/ECO installs.

It can be difficult to identify if someone is living in fuel poverty, but here are some signs you can look out for:

  • Wearing lots of clothes indoors
  • Staying in bed to keep warm
  • Complaining that home feels cold, damp or draughty
  • Respiratory problems such as asthma or a persistent cough
  • Complaining that energy bills are too high or owing money
  • Not understanding energy bills
  • Feeling isolated and unable to go out and socialise

What is a Smart Meter?

Smart Meters are the new generation of gas and electricity meters. Gradually, across Great Britain, energy suppliers are replacing the traditional gas and electric meters with new smart meters.

How does a Smart Meter work?

The smart meter sends your gas and electricity readings direct to your energy supplier, so no more rummaging around in a cupboard or letting a stranger into your home to read the meter.

As well as your smart meter, you’ll receive a portable in-home display that clearly shows you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence.

This makes it easier to spot areas in the home where you may be wasting energy and where you could make changes to reduce it. Not only could you be saving energy, but money too.
